Kaspersky Anti-Virus and McAfee both managed 100 percent protection in their respective antiphishing tests.Īvira's free and Pro editions both come with a large entourage of associated Avira programs, most of them free. Avira detected and blocked just 66 percent of the samples the protection built into Chrome and Firefox did significantly better in this test. I tested the free and Pro editions of Avira side by side and got precisely the same result. However, Bitdefender, Symantec Norton AntiVirus Basic, and McAfee all did better, with 99, 98, and 97 percent protection respectively.īrowser Safety also serves to fend off phishing sites, fraudulent sites that attempt to steal your passwords. Clicking Modules from the menu reveals one more Pro-specific feature, called Protection Cloud Plus. The big difference is that all four of those components are enabled, where the free edition only has Real-Time Protection. The app's main window is a near-ringer for that of the free antivirus, with a simple left-side menu and four big buttons representing essential protection components: Real-Time Protection, Ransomware Protection, Web Protection, and Mail Protection. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, Webroot, and Emsisoft match are all in that $40 price range, as are more than a dozen others. That's still higher than the sweet spot price of just under $40. The product does seem to be on a permanent discount of about 25 percent right now, the one-license subscription goes for $44.95 per year. The biggest reason to pay for it is if you want to use Avira in a commercial setting, which isn't allowed with the free version.Īvira's pricing is decidedly on the high side, with a list price of $59.88 per year for one license, $71.88 for three, and $95.88 for five. Avira Antivirus Pro adds several components not available to users of the free Avira Antivirus, but they don't really add a lot of value. Some encourage upgrading to the for-pay edition by piling on significant pro-only tools and components. But these companies can't survive unless some users lay down cash for paid editions. The more computers there are that have antivirus, the safer things are for all of us. You have to admire the companies that provide free antivirus to the masses.
